Chemo Quilts for Central Oregon
We need quilts, quilts, quilts!
The American Cancer Society, partnering with Chemo Quilts for Central Oregon, would like your help in
creating a Chemotherapy Quilt to keep cancer patients warm while they endure their infusions, lasting 4 - 7
hours, weekly, twice a month, or every 3 weeks. The Infusion Centers, staffed by St. Charles Hospital in Bend
and Redmond and the Bend Memorial Clinic, serve over 375 patients every week.
The quilts these centers already have are not able to withstand the rigorous standards of washing and sanitation
that are so necessary in a medical environment. So, what is the solution? A CHEMO QUILT!
What is a CHEMO QUILT?
Quite simply, a single block quilt that measures 42-44" x 68." 2 yards of fabric for the front, 2 yards of fabric for
the backing plus batting, quilting, and 1/2 yard for the machine binding = a Chemo Quilt. These single block
quilts will stand up better to the laundry standards of these centers as there are no seams to pull or fray.
What can YOU do?
Donate any fabric and/or batting you can.
Show up at BJ's Quilt Basket on any of our scheduled Chemo Quilt Work Days below to work on:
1) your own material to donate or
2) to work on any donated material we have available.
Thursday, January 19 12:00pm- 5:00pm

Chemo Quilts for Central Oregon is a registered non-profit backed by the American Cancer Society- if you are
not a quilter but would like to help, financial donations are also accepted. Contact their organization to make one

Awesome! So what do I need to get started?
Fabric: Must be of good quality cottons (including flannels) to withstand hot water commerical laundering every
time it is used by an adult cancer patient. The fabric theme needs to be for adults and cheerful! Avoid metallics,
as they tend not to stand up to the rigorous washings. Also, avoid reds that tend to bleed and dark blues and
black that tend to fade.
Batting: Your choice! Though wool batting or high loft battings are not recommended.
Machine Quilting: Must be quilted at a minimum of 3" between lines. Ideal styles include cross hatch, meander,
stippling, pantograph, walking foot lines. Keep in mind this is a utility quilt, so it is important that the machine
quilting be of a density that keeps the quilt sandwich intact. Please, no hand-tied quilts, as they do not withstand
the multiple launderings.
